Overview of XMRV associated XMRV infection

Xenotropic murine leukaemia virus-related virus (XMRV) is a gamma-retrovirus closely related to murine leukaemia viruses (MLVs) which cause cancer and other diseases in mice. XMRV was first described in patients with prostate cancer, and a strong association with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) has been reported . The detection of XMRV DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in 3.7% of healthy controls has raised concern about the potential of XMRV transmission by blood transfusion (PMID: 22350961).
