Overview of HIV associated HIV-HBV-HDV coinfection
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infects about 2 billion people globally and accounts for mortality of about 800,000 from liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 70% of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) global burden. HIV/HBV co-infection results in the early development of HBV complications, alterations of serological biomarkers of HBV.(PMID: 34029499). Because of the similar modes of contamination (contaminated medical injections, infected blood transfusions, sexual transitions, and intravenous drug use with unreliable materials), co-infection with viral hepatitis and HIV is often observed in most countries.
