In the three wild type protease-PI complexes: DRV_0, LPV_0, and NFV_0, naturally occurring single residue substitutions S37N, L63P, and V3I, respectively, were found to shrink the PI-binding pocket (~30% decrease in DRV_0 and LPV_0, and ~10% decrease in NFV_0).
