Because of overlapping open reading frames there are often HBsAg peptide changes that result from the emergence of polymerase drug resistant (DR) mutations, for instance, polymerase mutations M552V, M552I, A529V, T532G, and S551I result in the HBsAg alterations I195M, W196S, L173F, L176V, and V194F, respectively.
