The ability to promote the degradation of p53 protein has been suggested as a mechanism by which E6 protein from the high‐risk HPV types exhibits oncogenic activities, so a 16E6 mutant‐F2V (Phe‐2 to Val mutation) that does not degrade p53 yet retains 16E6 activities for immortalization of HMECs was constructed as we previously described.
