Impact of Universal Hepatitis B Vaccination on Prevalence, Infection-Associated Morbidity and Mortality, and Circulation of Immune Escape Variants in Russia.
 PMID: 27280884       2016       PloS one
5Result: The prevalence of amino acid substitutions in HBsAg was 38% (24/63), but only 2 of these 24 mutations were within the ""a"" determinant of HBsAg (1 M133T mutation, 1 G145S mutation)."
Abstract: Only in 3% (2/63) the mutations were within the a-determinant of HBsAg (M133T and G145S, one case each).

Characterization of Novel Hepatitis B Virus PreS/S-Gene Mutations in a Patient with Occult Hepatitis B Virus Infection.
 PMID: 27182775       2016       PloS one

Ultradeep Sequencing for Detection of Quasispecies Variants in the Major Hydrophilic Region of Hepatitis B Virus in Indonesian Patients.
PMID: 26202119       2015       Journal of clinical microbiology
Abstract: The most frequent MHR variants related to immune evasion in the major and intermediate populations were P120Q/T, T123A, P127T, Q129H/R, M133L/T, and G145R.

[Occult hepatitis B virus infection in normal population, Xiamen].
PMID: 26081397       2015       Zhonghua yu fang yi xue za zhi [Chinese journal of preventive medicine]
1Abstract: 3 types of amino acid (AA) mutation (M133T, T140I, G145R) that influence ""a"" epitope conformation were observed in 9 subjects with occult HBV infection."

Seroepidemiology and occult hepatitis B virus infection in young adults in Banjarmasin, Indonesia.
PMID: 25521058       2015       Journal of medical virology
Abstract: Thirteen amino acid substitutions were identified: T126S, P127S, Q129R, T131N, M133T, and Y161S in the HBsAg-positive group; P120T, T126I, G145S, Y161F, E164V, and V168F in the occult-HBV group; and T143S in both groups.

Genotyping and virological characteristics of hepatitis B virus in HIV-infected individuals in Sudan.
PMID: 25449246       2014       International journal of infectious diseases
Abstract: The following mutations in the S region could account for the HBsAg negativity: sM133T, sE164G, sV168G, and sS174N.

Molecular epidemiology and genotyping of hepatitis B virus of HBsAg-positive patients in Oman.
 PMID: 24835494       2014       PloS one
Result: Other possible vaccine escape mutations were detected at positions T126 (T126S) and M133 (M133T); however, their impact on vaccine escape is under discussion.
Table: M133T
Discussion: We found the sP120T, sT126S, sM133T, and sT/S143L/M mutations in the HBsAg-positive patients while these mutations have been previously described as possible vaccine escape mutations (reviewed in:).

Unique surface gene variants of hepatitis B virus isolated from patients in the Philippines.
PMID: 24009186       2014       Journal of medical virology
Abstract: The amino acid substitution M133T which was associated with failure of HBsAg detection was found in one isolate (7%, 1/15), while the amino acid substitution D144A which was associated with vaccine escape was observed in one isolate (7%, 1/15).

Characterization of the occult hepatitis B virus variants circulating among the blood donors from eastern India.
 PMID: 24302857       2013       TheScientificWorldJournal
Discussion: Mutations related to diagnostic failure (such as M133T/I, F134N, and S143L) including vaccine escape mutations such as D144A and G145R could not be found.

Molecular characterization of hepatitis B virus in liver disease patients and asymptomatic carriers of the virus in Sudan.
PMID: 23865777       2013       BMC infectious diseases
Abstract: Three isolates had the vaccine escape mutant sM133T.
Result: The vaccine escape mutation, sM133T, was observed in genotype E isolates, SDAC022, SDAC067 and SDAC088.
Discussion: Interestingly, three genotype E isolates had the sM133T mutation, which could possibly compromise antibody neutralization and may represent potential vaccine escape mutants.
